We may be affected but I believe we can manage it well
I don't know
We will be affected by it just like the rest of the world.

Counters should be fixed to all traffic lights. This helps to warn the motorist how much time left for the lights to change colour. At present, there are some traffic light that are fixed with the counters but it only tells the pedestrians the time it changes to a Red Man. With these counters, it helps the motorists to decide whether or not they decelerate and stop or to speed up. In this way, accident rate may be greatly reduced.

Reminds me when I'm in Old Burma ... that's how they do it too ... interesting ... I guess it's still a good idea to consider...

I'm not a driver myself but I think this is a great idea! It will also help the cars at the back of the line to get into gear and ready to move. Sounds like it will increase traffic speeds? To build on this idea, we can implement something similar to what is already happening for pedestrian crossings, where the red lights will count down the numbers before changing to a red man. We can have a solid red light switching to a numerical countdown. When it counts to zero, it will switch to green light!

Some parts of Shanghai have countdown indicators for vehicular traffic.
In the form of a shortening green bar.
All LED's too.

I don't know if it will reduce accidents though...
my guess is there will always be people who speed up tremendously from far away to try to beat the countdown, and sometimes they will misjudge their timing...

I think it will help cut down on drivers bashing thru red lights and therefore accidents. Alot of times drivers misjudge yellow lights and try to accelerate thinking that they still have time, but maybe it's only 1 second left. Could start implementing from heavy traffic junctions like CBD area. If it works for so many other countries, it should work for Singapore too.

I read somewhere there is a town in Europe where there are absolutely no traffic lights and not even road lane markers! The roads are just, well, blank, and they have reported lower traffic accidents! This was supposedly due to the fact that people tend to drive more carefully by nature when there are no road markings or traffic lights, since no one really has "right of way" anymore and everyone assumes equal responsibility to keep the roads safe. As they put it: "Uncertainty breeds caution"!

Personally I do not think it will work in Singapore, judging from how people "queue" to get onto the buses and trains, but it's still some food for thought... You never know!

Check out .www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/11/04/ntraffic04.xml for details!

Wah! Though no traffic light sounds interesting, I can't imagine the chaos it will cause if SG implement it.

I remember visiting Canada, and when we tried to jaywalk across the street, the cars actually STOPPED for us, gave us a smile and waved us through. To my utter amazement. If I jaywalk in SG, I'm not surprised to be horn by the drivers, or worst, have them speed up.

To have no traffic lights, I think we have a long way to go.

That's also my first thought when I heard about it. Perhaps not in Singapore for a while... Or maybe we can implement it in smaller estates and in stages? That would pave the way (no pun intended) to a wider adoption on a larger scale in future.

The question now is, does LTA have the nerve to try out such a radical scheme, even on a small scale? It truly requires a huge paradigm shift for highly-regulated Singapore.
