I am proposing a monthly bus and train travel pass (“Universal Travel Pass”) for adults. The concept is similar to the Season Pass that SBS currently provides for its bus passengers; the difference being that this universal transport pass would allow unlimited travel on both buses and trains.

The benefits are obvious - having paid for the travel pass, it would be in the interest of the commuter to maximize his usage of public transport. Secondly, in providing greater convenience and seamless travel to the frequent commuter, it brings us one step closer to a world-class public transport system.

Currently, there is little incentive for the transport companies (i.e. SMRT and SBS) to work together as they can achieve the same outcome by introducing travel passes separately. A public transportation reshuffle is already dominating much of the headlines, but this is one “merger” that should happen regardless of the outcome.

Monthly pass should not be priced too highly too. With the ever-increasing price of taxis, people who do not drive, travel largely by buses/trains therefore the price of a monthly pass should be kept at a reasonable price too.

Excellent idea. Japan has such a scheme. In fact one pass allows you to travel on different mode of transport except taxis--and across different operators. how they split the takings i have no idea. but the convenience to the commuters is immense.

you can buy it as a monthly, quarterly or half-yearly pass. Anyone to suggest to our transport operators?
Companies may decide to pay for the transport cost as a staff benefit as in Japan. everyone is happy!

Good idea - What shall be the amount for the pass ? S$100, S$200 0r S$300? Who shall determine the amount? Do you think survey targeted at all communters in Singapore can determine the amount or LTA determine the amount? What shall be the measuring instrument to determine the amount?

one way is to look at the average usage in a day--how many times you hop on or off the bus or trains, how long a distance you travel to and fro, and then leave it as that. anyone using more is like a discount for them.

in any case, with the season pass, the transport company has already earn a 'free-float' by collecting your fares up front.

You are right. But who will convince the transport company ? Unless the Transport Minister could help us in this?

Thank you.

well said guest. and we like all other singaporeans, will be complaining about what is not done and what should be done. In order for the transport minister to help us, someone needs to talk to him. I dont think any of us will do it rite? so.... case close?????
